The Rising Star Scholarship Program was launched in 2009 as the result of a partnership between Resident Services, Incorporated (RSI) and the Resident Advisory Board (RAB) that provides need and merit-based scholarships to students who have been accepted to accredited higher learning institutions. The program is designed to encourage academic excellence and to foster leadership potential in young people.
The program provides financing to the selected colleges of the scholarship recipients, which enables them to attain their academic goals. As of 2017 each Rising Star Scholarship is a $5,000 scholarship that is to be distributed
$1,250 per year for four (4) years.
The 2017 Rising Star Scholarship recipients are:
Avery Williams is a 2017 graduate of Baltimore Polytechnic Institute. He holds a 3.5 GPA. He will attend the Howard University where he will major in Electrical Engineering. M r. Williams is a resident of the Housing Choice Voucher Program.
Sheila Shaheed is a 2017 graduate of Western High School. He holds a
4.16 GPA. She will attend the Howard University where she will major in Biology. Miss Shaheed is a resident ofthe Cherry Hill Homes.
Tatyana Allen is a 2017 graduate of Cristo Rey High School with a GPA of 3.55. She will attend Stevenson University where she will major in Business Management. Miss Allen is a resident ofScattered Sites.
George Magege is a 2017 graduate of August Fells Savage Institute of Visual Arts with a GPA of 3.48. He will attend Salisbury University and plans to major in Business Administration and Law. Mr. Magege is a resident ofthe Housing Choice Voucher Program.
Brionna Lewis is a 2017 graduate of Vivian Thomas Medical Academy High School with a GPA of 3.2. She plans to attend Morgan State University where she will major in Nursing. Miss Lewis is a resident of the Housing Choice Voucher Program.
Eligible Scholars must be a current resident of the HABC Public Housing, Rehabilitated Housing or Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) Programs; a graduating high school senior who has been accepted to an accredited college or university with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or greater on a 4.0 scale.
Each participant must provide the following: 1) a complete scholarship application; 2) provide an official high school transcript with GPA recorded and SAT Scores, (if applicable); 3) provide one (1) letter of recommendation from the principal, guidance counselor or teacher of current attending school; 4) provide one (1) personal letter of recommendation from a non-family acquaintance; 5) submit a typewritten essay of 350-500 words explaining who he/she should receive this scholarship; and 6) provide a summary of personal and career goals.
All submissions are then reviewed by the Rising Star Scholarship Selection Committee utilizing a point system and an oral interview before the points are tabulated to determine who will be awarded the scholarships.
